![]() For readers like me who grew up on "The Hunger Games" and " Twilight," Maas' books provide much-needed adult, fantasy stories told from a female perspective (and it doesn't hurt that she writes, ahem, more mature romance, either). ![]() ![]() Maas is best known for writing books about faeries she's published 15 books across three series so far. Maas has become a household name for fantasy and romance readers like myself in recent years. Here's the reading order I'd recommend as an avid fan of Maas' books. With 15 books published so far, it can be tricky to know where to start if you want to join the fandom. Maas' fantasy series, especially "A Court of Thorns and Roses." ![]() BloomsburyīookTok can't get enough of Sarah J. Maas has published popular fantasy books including "A Court of Thorns and Roses," "Throne of Glass," and more. ![]() ![]() The more people join in and and post up thoughts, comments and observations - the better this will work, so don’t be afraid to be the first to mention something or post up a quote you really enjoyed. ![]() To get an overview of what’s planned - take a peep at the new welcome messageįor now though, it’s time to dive into Hogwatch! and other things ending in olly.Ī few of us have conspired to kick-off book club again - starting with Hogfather and then launching into the full catalogue from the beginning in the New Year. With the support and empowerment of their moms, the sunflower sisters are two strong, confident girls–one South Asian the other Nigerian–finding joy in their own skin. In this heartwarming celebration of skin shades from sun-browned to autumn-leaf-gold, Amitra and Kiki get dressed for their siblings' weddings while enduring family nitpicks about lightening cream, sun rays, and the skin-darkening effects of the color yellow. Sunflower Sisters celebrates two strong and independent girls experiencing each other's South Asian and Nigerian traditions while learning to embrace the color of their dark brown skin ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The thesis of the novel is that, whilst white America is slightly uncomfortable with the facts as they stand, they can point to a number of black high achievers (not least the first African-American President) as evidence that they have done all they could. Unfortunately, this has not addressed a fundamental problem of disparity of outcomes between whites and blacks (or people of colour more widely), in academic achievement, income, social status, crime, you name it, the statistics paint a troublesome picture. ![]() ![]() Firstly, it abolished slavery and then set in place several pieces of legislation to reinforce racial equality. This is a novel about race in modern America where the white population seems to feel it has solved the problem of racism. There at least two other books on the shortlist that I have enjoyed more (I reviewed them here recently, Hot Milk and Eileen), but by golly this is an extraordinarily clever book! I’m not even sure I’m clever enough to review it! The blurb doesn’t really tell you what it’s about and the arty commentators I heard talking about it on the news when it won the prize, didn’t really say what it was about either (I’ll bet most of them had not even read it!) And I’m not surprised, because it is a really difficult book to describe. It’s a week since Paul Beatty’s The Sellout was announced as the winner of this year’s Man Booker Prize, and, finally, I have finished it. ![]() ![]() Viva digital comics! Monkeybrain, through Comixology, publishes this noir ongoing by Joshua Williamson and a rotating band of artists. Part “Rockford Files,” part Donald Westlake, part superhero, this is a must-read every month. I never thought this series would work - hey, look, Hawkeye in his fourth attempt at an ongoing! - but writer Matt Fraction and artist David Aja own the material with a voice unlike any other out there. Were I a smarter man, I’d be trying to bury coverage of this title now that it’s surpassed Daredevil on so many critics’ lists, but I’m dumb that way. Writer/artist Jeff Lemire has been on my radar for some time, but his creator-owned work never seemed stronger to me than what he’s doing in this science-fiction tale spanning centuries in a dual-narrative, multi-layered approach to storytelling that’s deceptively sophisticated. I thought this kind of story had been done to death - sad-sack, also-ran villains played for laughs - but writer Nick Spencer treads the line between comedy and tragedy brilliantly. The ongoing story of a band of secondary Spider-Man villains trying to make one last big score. ![]() ![]() Mark‘s the man of the moment this week, so we’re trotting out an extra WHAT I’M READING: ![]() ![]() ![]() Like Albert, the Death of Rats and his raven can be assumed to be somewhere in the background when the story focuses on Death's house. The Death of Rats (occasionally using Quoth as transport) is often responsible for dragging Susan from her 'normal' life into the realm of her grandfather, Death, to assist him in saving the world and other such irritating family duties. This can only be understood by certain people, Susan Sto Helit in particular for those occasions when he needs to communicate with others, he employs the help of Quoth, a raven who used to belong to a wizard and has therefore absorbed enough magic to be able to speak. , with the occasional emphasis of an eek-eek Like the Librarian, the Death of Rats can communicate everything in a one-syllable sound: squeak The Death of Rats was once merely a part of Death himself, but after the events of Reaper Man, Death decided to keep him on as an independent entity - possibly for sentimental reasons. Partners or Partners’ or Partner’s? ![]() ![]() Once invisible, Griffin’s personality gets worse. In fact, these qualities are his defining features prior to his accomplishing the impossible. His invisibility and loneliness do not bring out his worst qualities. Wells’ original novella, Griffin is an ill-intentioned person from the start. ![]() Unlike depictions of the “Invisible Man” in film and television, in H.G. He is a multi-dimensional character in what I’ve always found to be a two-dimensional world. He’s the smartest physicist of his age, Wells writes at the end of the book, something that went to waste when mixed with Griffin’s narcissism and self-destructive actions. Throughout the novel, Wells’ narrator does not shy away from mentioning how brilliant Griffin, the Invisible Man is. Rather than see Griffin’s invisibility play out, readers are left with memories of the past and a very limited timeline of events. Most clearly in its few characters and limited setting. Without a doubt, the short novel is an exciting accomplishment, one that has entranced and entertained readers of all ages for over 100 years.īut, there are some areas where it’s lacking. The novel blends science, fantasy, and reality into what is considered to be one of the early masterpieces of science fiction novel writing. It was followed by the equally well-known (albeit for slightly different reasons) The War of the Worlds. ![]() |
